"It's the exciting feeling of being abroad, in Africa. In the atrium a paradisiacal oasis with hidden corners of a thousand and one nights mixed with avant-garde chic. On the roof terrace we look over the medina, the wild soul of Marrakech - a labyrinth of endless adventures and morbid beauty."

Outside the narrow and crowded streets and here in the Riad Mena you will discover a luxurious oasis with palm trees and a swimming pool!

It leads us through bright red, narrow streets until we reach a heavy, ornately decorated door. Behind it is the heavenly world of the Riad Mena of the cool owner Philomena Schurer Merckoll. We are warmly welcomed and enter the exotic-looking inner courtyard: blooming bird of paradise flowers, coconut palms towering into the sky, orange trees, the twittering of birds and the smell of freshly prepared Moroccan housewives' food. A step into another world - with all your senses.

Together with designer Romain Michel-Meniere, Philomena renovated the 18th century riad and carefully designed a chic oasis of well-being. The luxurious rooms blend cosmopolitan aesthetics and minimalism with traditional Moroccan culture and architecture. Wonderfully soft, cream-colored Berber carpets, high-end bathroom designs and, above all, an incredibly comfortable and spacious bed. You will experience a special highlight in The Indian Room: in the afternoon the light falls through the oriental decorated wooden shutters and creates a unique play of shadows! The pool always invites you to refresh yourself.

On our first evening we are surprised with a phenomenal dinner that is unparalleled in the city. Different traditional, Moroccan dishes (including tajines, of course, but not only!) Follow one another and fill the table with exotic delicacies. The very shy cooks deserve praise! Breakfast takes place in the idyllic courtyard: olives are served with Moroccan flatbread, pancakes and homemade jams.

The riad is located in the middle of the medina, so that you can always take a break after strolling through the city. We particularly recommend an afternoon drink on the roof terrace and a cooling dip in the picturesque pool in the rear courtyard, which with the great tiles is also a sensational photo location.

The door-hinge discussions with the in-house staff were particularly exciting. In Morocco, many political developments can and must (unfortunately) also be viewed critically. The history of the Berbers or, politically, much better, the Amazigh opened up a whole new horizon of Moroccan culture and inspired us to explore the Atlas Mountains, thank you for that!

※ Breakfast with the chirping of birds, between palm trees and in the middle of the medina

※ Be sure to experience this unique "lost-in-medina" feeling. It is a mix of adventure, tension, panic and joie de vivre!

※ Extensive forays through the souks

※ Chilling by the pool and with a drink on the roof terrace

※ A visit to Phelomina's favorite shop: Mustapha Blaoui

※ Be sure to stop by the in-house design shop - great for collector's items!

The path leads us first through the typical reddish alleys of the medina ...

Welcome to Marrakech: Riad Mena - what a welcome!

In the heavenly inner courtyard you will find wonderful lounges in oriental style between orange trees and strelitzia

Cuddly residents ...

Draw new inspiration ...

The second level of the atrium offers generous spaces for reading and relaxing on the hot afternoon

The entrances to the suites are often a bit hidden ...

A dream of a riad

... and exotic flowers, colors and shapes everywhere

The suites combine traditional African-Oriental elements with the modern chic of Europe. A wonderfully comfortable box spring bed meets an antique Beni Ourain rug from the local Berbers

It's winter in Germany and here in the courtyard

you have breakfast in the green inner courtyard with birdsong ...

After breakfast you go on a discovery tour

The whole dazzling world of Marrakech is just a few minutes' walk from the riad

After the morning in the city comes the contrast program:

into the bathrobe and into the pool

almost there...

At lunchtime, the sun shines in the picturesque inner courtyard with the colorfully decorated tiled floor and the lush green palm trees

In the evening you can experience breathtaking sunsets from the roof terrace!

Shortly after sunset at blue hour is the best time to experience the Djemaa el-Fna - you have the most beautiful view from one of the adjacent cafes

In the evening we return to Riad Mena and the fireplace burns as if by magic and a fantastic dinner is served to us!

The ambience in the library is magical and the traditional dishes on offer are excellent!

We were even able to eat in peace, because Moroccans are probably among the most child-friendly people ...

Every question is answered with patience and depth and every excursion is organized by the warm and helpful manager in the riad

The city is magical and the flair of the African continent is overwhelming

It is part of getting lost in the medina. The best way to do this is to look for the most beautiful carpet in town! We'll be happy to tell you where to find it, feel free to contact us!

Hotels with Soul by NECTAR & PULSE is a personal collection of our favourite hotels around the globe. They have two things in common: soul and passion. Some serve the best coffee we’ve ever tasted. Some the comfiest beds and linen. Some have a sauna in the woods and delicious home-made jams. Others have a butler available 24/7 or a hunter ready to take you on a hunt. One has a library where you’ll want to while away the hours, another one a kitchen stocked with the best midnight snacks.

What they all have in common is great design, friendly people, and authenticity. We call it the NECTAR & PULSE vibe. It’s that feeling where it’s so comfortable, it almost feels home, but you feel like there’s so much to learn, see, and do. These are the places that make you think to yourself, “there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.” Hotels with Soul are the ultimate destination for curious travellers with a good taste. Discover their story. Experience their soul.

We love to discover new places and to add more beautiful places to our collection. If you think that your hotel reflects our philosophy, please get in touch with us at hello@nectarandpulse.com. We are happy to give you further information, our media kit and our terms. We are looking forward to get to know you and eventually to work together.
